About ‘Sruthi Tharangam’

Sruthitharangam (Cochlear Implantation Scheme) intended to provide free surgery to children in the age group of 0-3 years, who are suffering from deafness. The early identification and intervention procedures initiated within six months of age should be the golden standard for the holistic development of a child with hearing loss.

Cochlear Implant are proven options for the treatment of profound hearing loss. Over 2,00,000 people have been implanted world wide.

Limiting factors of the Cochlear Implantation surgery are lack of awareness among parents especially among the medical professionals and teachers and the need of early intervention of hearing loss and the benefits of cochlear implantation. And also the cost of surgery.

A successful cochlear implant program involves many steps from hearing' screening to post-operative rehabilitation. A coordinated multidiscipline approach is essential to ensure optimal outcomes. A successful cochlear implant program cannot occur without a well-resourced neonatal hearing screening program, coordinated assessment programs by audiology, speech pathology, educational and medical services and a dedicated auditory verbal therapy team for rehabilitation.

The objective of the scheme is to provide financial assistance for cochlear implantation among children of 0-3 years, with hearing impairment.
